Indian Government has laid out a multi-ministerial plan to discourage the use of single use plastics across the country to free India of single use plastics by 2022. The nationwide ban on plastic bags, cups, plates, water bottles, straws etc. has already began from October 2, 2019 to eliminate single use plastics from cities and villages that rank among the world's most polluted.
In view of the above, awareness programmes to avoid the use of single-use plastics has been identified as one of the themes for the Iconic Week celebrations of the Ministry of Environment, under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Single-use plastics have emerged as a serious environmental threat if it remains littered. The plastics get into water bodies and are carried to oceans and seas adversely impacting the health of marine ecosystems and the environment.
As part of Iconic week celebrations on awareness programme for avoiding single use plastics, TERI ENVIS RP took up awareness activities, targeting school students and youth, citizens and citizens groups, industry, market associations, research community etc by spreading awareness which involved following activities:
- Created an awareness poster on plastic waste management and how small steps can create big impact.
- One month long social media campaign via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram.
- Conducted a webinar on plastic waste management and its impact on human health.
