Most vocational training programmes focus on mechanical/technical skills rather than ‘soft’ or ‘green’ skills. Green skills contribute to preserving or restoring environmental quality for sustainable future and include jobs that protect ecosystems and biodiversity, reduce energy and minimize waste and pollution. In line with the Skill India Mission of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) utilising the vast network and expertise of ENVIS Hubs/RPs, has taken up an initiative for skill development in the environment and forest sector to enable India's youth to get gainful employment and/or self-employment, called the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP). The programme endeavours to develop green skilled workers having technical knowledge and commitment to sustainable development, which will help in the attainment of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), National Biodiversity Targets (NBTs), as well as Waste Management Rules (2016).

This GSDP programme is conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) ENVIS Resource partner under the umbrella of ENVIS, a flagship scheme of MoEF&CC where the unemployed youths including 10th and 12th dropouts, Graduates and I.T.I. were given a chance to learn about solar energy technologies under the course titled “Sustain and Enhance Technical Knowledge in Solar Energy Systems”. The idea behind the course is to make the participants self-reliant and employable so that they can earn a decent living. The batch of 30 students was selected after scrutinizing their applications and interviewed by our experts, and then were given all-round training to enhance their knowledge on solar energy technologies. The course involved training by subject experts and practical exposure of problem solving using solar energy technologies and equipment.. These students are very keen in learning, become technically proficient after attending the training and have shown the best sign in implementing the technology applications in industrial environment. Some of the students have also shown keen interest to become entrepreneurs.

The course also involved training by subject experts and practical exposure of problem solving using solar energy technologies and equipment’s. These students were quite keen in learning and becoming technically proficient after attending the training and displayed the best signs in implementing the technology applications in an industrial environment. Some of the students have also shown keen interest to become entrepreneurs.

After the successful completion of the GSDP courses in Purnea (Bihar) and Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Ranchi (Jharkhand). The GSDP courses are going to be conducted in 6 different cities.

The idea behind the course was to make the participants aware of the following:

  • Understand and assess the market needs and the capability to meet these;

  • Inculcate a step-by-step understanding of the methodology and design a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system;

  • Identify different types of solar devices and assessment of power, customization of solar system and its importance;

  • Acquire a basic understanding of actual project implementation and the design principles of solar PV.

Subject-Skill Development to sustain and enhance technical knowledge in Solar Energy Systems".

Objective & description:

  •  This program will impart and enhance entrepreneurial capabilities which in turn generate employment for individual and better services in terms of product delivery and after sale service for the user.

  •  Improvement of local skilled manpower for different renewable energy power projects in Himalayan region.

  •  Build capacity for rural youths to enhancement of the solar related technologies.
