The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is a leading think tank dedicated to conducting research for sustainable development of India and the Global South.

TERI was established in 1974 as an information centre on energy issues. However, over the following decades, it made a mark as a research institute, whose policy and technology solutions transformed people's lives and the environment.

About TERI ENVIS Resource partner:

ENVIS known as Environmental Information System network was established as a programme under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change (MoEFCC), Government of India, in December 1982. Large number of nodes called ENVIS hubs and ENVIS resource partners previously known as state centres and thematic centres respectively, have been established under the network to cover the broad subject area of the environment with a focal point situated in MoEFCC.

TERI has been working as one of the nodes of ENVIS, situated in TERI library since 1984. It was known as the centre on Renewable Energy and Environment since July 1984; however since 2017 TERI started acting as the ENVIS resource partner on Renewable energy and Climate change.

TERI ENVIS is responsible for fulfilling the following objectives:

i.            To promote, implement and coordinate Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP).

ii.          To implement and coordinate Grid Based Decision Support System (GRIDSS) programme.

iii.         To participate, implement and coordinate Community-driven Environmentally Sustainable Village Programme (CESVP) as and when intimated by ENVIS Focal Point.

iv.        To build a repository and dissemination centre in Environmental Science, Information  and Management (ESIM).

v.          To enable application of modern technologies of acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information of environmental nature.

vi.        To support and promote research, development and innovation in ESIM.

vii.       To build storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities, with the ultimate objective of disseminating information speedily to the users.

viii.     To build a strong statistical base such that ENVIS is recognised as a South Asian Hub for ESIM.

ix.        To promote national cooperation and liaise with agencies concerned for exchange of environment related information.

x.          To promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance ESIM capabilities.

Along with the above listed objectives, TERI ENVIS RP will develop, maintain and continuously update a comprehensive information base that includes descriptive information as well as numerical data, with GIS and other mapping on the assigned Subject Area, which would cover data/information/status/issues at local/district/state levels.

User profile of TERI ENVIS Resource partner:

The focus of TERI ENVIS resource partner, since its inception has been to provide information on environment and related sectors to decision-makers, policy planners, corporate and industrial houses, scientists, researchers, faculty members and students across country. Amongst all the target audience, students happen to be the most benefitted from TERI ENVIS activities, followed by researchers. TERI ENVIS information products are often considered by the researchers for enhancing their research work through the data provided. However, the mandate of ENVIS is into its transformation stage towards primary data collection and research, TERI ENVIS RP is now trying to involve policy makers as the key target audience for TERI ENVIS activities.

The resource partner now focuses on preparing reports are based on primary or published data through regular visits to different places and organizations. Such reports are focused to provide ground level knowledge on the RE and CC issues. The data collected is then studied and analyzed to bring out effective results that perhaps can contribute to government decision making process.

TERI ENVIS has been involved in representing information in a spatial format through various platforms, such as Bhuvan portal, a section on RE Landscape. The RP is now planning to incorporate QGIS as a platform to represent data spatially in the website.

During the year, the resource partner utilizes TERI’s strong information dissemination wing for disseminating its products and services. Information is disseminated using the following tools and services:-
